Simon Ricketts: Twitter and news: The canary down... →
simonnricketts:
“Twitter does its best work in the first five minutes after a disaster, and its worst in the twelve hours after that.” - @rolldiggity
There is a quiet that descends in a newsroom when a big story breaks.
Forget the Hollywood clichés of cigar-chewing editors shouting…
Excellent dissection.

Why Google's rumoured streaming service makes... →
The company is already a huge, albeit unofficial, player in streaming music. YouTube is now a top destination for listening to songs and albums, not to mention the trove of remixes and parodies that get uploaded everyday. Today, when teenagers want to hear a new song, they don’t turn on the radio or buy a CD. They go to YouTube.
Some good points on Read Write. Though I can’t stand...

The consumerisation of music technology
‘The consumerisation of IT’ is an established trend, as consumer technology is advancing so swiftly it’s having some interesting affects on enterprise tech. Tablet devices, smartphones, social networks and BYOD are forcing exciting things to happen to business computing and causing a few headaches for IT managers and CIOs. But IT is not the only industry that these technologies...

Summer 2012 playlist
The early onset of Summer (it’s still March?!) has got me all in the mood for the kind of tunes that befit a later sunset. This set of songs is what I predict will be sound tracking my sunshine season, and darn well should yours. Which means it is a mix of new tracks, but there’s a few in there that are just in my (or general) consciousness for whatever reason. As it is indeed still...

Laura Marling - Colston Hall, Bristol, March 3rd...
After the first song of Laura Marling’s set (The Muse) she explained that her 14 year old self would be high-fiving her right now, as Colston Hall was where she watched her first gig. A shout from the audience asked who it was. The reply, Ryan Adams, initiated laughter among the crowd.
[[MORE]]I can only assume that the laughter was due to what I assume was always Ryan Adams’ biggest...

Brand at MHP: What can PRs learn from MailOnline’s... →
Sort of an addendum to earlier post, about MailOnline’s approach to SEO.
brandatmhp:
We were fascinated to read The Drum’s insider story on the secrets behind MailOnline’s huge 100 million readership in January. The relevance to US audiences and that sidebar; that much we knew. It was the approach to SEO techniques that is really interesting.
Having worked with Yahoo!…

In support of SEO journalism
It’s long been an absolute must for a PR professional to understand at least the basics of SEO. That isn’t to say that the entire profession is now trained up, far from it, but at least if you speak to the majority of PR people they will acknowledge that they do need to know.
But it seems to be not so in journalism. I’ve often seen journalists who are in fact internet savvy make...

Do you like music?
I know. Stupid question right? Who doesn’t like music? This is one of the most popular pages on Facebook, as originally almost everyone on the social network has listed ‘listening to music’ as an interest. The music sharing #nowplaying hashtag is one of the most popular and enduring hashtags on Twitter.
I would say music is the most popular...

Is Twitter turning into a brand PR no go area?
brandatmhp:
It has not been a great couple of weeks for brands on Twitter.
McDonald’s in particular seems to have come in for a bashing. Last week’s golden arch themed outrage was over an article by Alex James in The Sun where he suggested the fast food chain was ‘in some ways, like a Michelin starred restaurant’ (the comparison wasn’t actually inaccurate, by the way). Now the McDonald’s...

Hipster brand uses hipster app to recruit hipsters.
brandatmhp:
I have never been one for designer label clothes. I have been resistant to Instagram as its retro filters offend my ‘real photographer’ purist sensibilities – it makes good photography too easy.
Yet I love this tie up between Levis and the hyper trendy photo sharing app du jour. Partly…

This post is not interesting
In my first ever primary school foray into creative writing my teacher told me the most important thing to remember to do when writing was avoid using the word ‘nice’. It seems odd now, I don’t use the word ‘nice’ a lot. Perhaps as a result of this advice now being deep seated in my approach to writing. Perhaps because it is a very primary school type of word.

“There may be riots in London, but silly season MUST GO ON”
- Nathan Barksalot, Costumed Dog Editor, The Sun
brandatmhp:
It’s that staple of the silly season - animals in funny costumes! It seems that we can never get enough of them, or The Only Way is Essex stories for that matter. This one from The Sun is about a dog groomer offering ‘furjazzling’, which involves TOWIE...

A bit OTT? This Lithuanian mayor perhaps takes things a little far in a bid to curb motorists who block cycle lanes - read the full story and see a video of the mayor’s exploits here.
